ABOUT

Nancy Margolis Gallery is pleased to announce Sarah Lubin’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The show will be on view January 10th through February 23rd, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday, January 10th from 6-8pm.

Sarah Lubin is a figurative painter who creates familiar, everyday scenes marked by stillness and mystery. Lubin, who earned a master’s degree in art history from Columbia University, draws inspiration from ancient sculpture and early Renaissance paintings. The artist’s subject matter focuses on the commonplace, for example, loading a dishwasher (The Spoon, 2017), experiencing insomnia (Insomnia, 2017), or going grocery shopping (Checkout, 2016). Painted primarily with oil on canvas, the figures in her compositions suggest a stoic remoteness that make them appear emotionally detached from their environment. Through her treatment of routine activities, Lubin transforms the mundane into something monumental.
